Window shopping guide q & A

"Large enough to serve you, small enough to know you!"

View your home in a whole new light.

Replacement windows can make a major difference in the appearance, comfort, energy costs and resale value of your home. But not all replacement windows are the same. In order to maximize your home improvement budget, it's important to question and understand some of the basics of quality window construction.

This guide includes straightforward answers to the most common and important window replacement questions facing homeowners today. If you have further questions, please call us directly at 773.239.2279.

Why should I buy custom replacement windows?

Custom windows are designed and manufactured for a perfect fit - every time. And that means less air infiltration and a more uniform appearance compared to stock windows. Schuco windows are made on every 1/8th" on height and width, which yields a 1/16th" or less spacing around the window frame.

Can I install new windows myself?

Sure you can, but the more important question is, "Should I?" . . . A window only performs best when it is installed perfectly, and precise measurements are of great importance when planning for new replacement windows. A qualified window professional has the expertise to ensure the windows are measured, installed, and trimmed-out in a beautiful and professional manner.

What's the difference between vinyl, wood & aluminum windows?

While there are a variety of materials available to make windows, vinyl is a great choice for many reasons. Vinyl is an excellent insulator. It does not conduct heat or cold like aluminum, which is a major source of lost energy. And in comparison to wood windows, vinyl is less likely to swell and shrink when the temperature and humidity shifts from season to season. Vinyl windows are also completely maintenance free, unlike wood windows. Most wood, composite, fiberglass and many vinyl windows have what is referred to as a straight jamb. A straight jamb does not allow for additional contours and weather-stripping channels to be engineered into the window jamb and sash contact points. A straight jamb therefore has less weather-stripping than a step jamb. Choose Double Hung windows that have a step jamb. This allows greater energy efficiency and provides 30% more weather-stripping than most windows.

What's the best way to manufacture windows?

The most efficient and consistent way to make custom windows is with automated equipment. Technologically-driven processes can ensure precision sash and mainframe fit to guarantee full contact weatherstripping and a professional installation that is perfectly square. And with a tight compression seal, you'll have effective protection against air infiltration, and you'll enjoy greater home comfort.

What is fusion welding?

Most vinyl window manufacturers use 2-point welders to fuse the vinyl components of their windows. Schuco uses a robotically controlled full Four-Point Welder. This process ensures that each window is welded on all four corners, at the same time. This step absolutely ensures a true square window. And, with our process, the weld at the corner is actually stronger than the window itself, giving you a stronger, better performing window.

My old windows used tape to hold the glass in place. What are the alternatives?

In today's world, very few new windows are made with two-sided tape or putty. This is due to advancements in technology that have provided better ways to secure the glass. By using an automated silicone glazing system (called Auto-Glazers), the glass and sash are securely bonded to provide a better seal and create a stronger one-piece window unit. This also eliminates any areas where air or water can penetrate around the glas unit and into your home.

Are replacement windows secure?

The strength of reinforced load points and the quality of locking systems play a major role in window security. The Schuco Corona 4000 window has a 5-point security feature built-in. They are fully stell reinforced on all horizontal load bearing sash rails, making them stronger and more durable. Schuco's optional PAL lock system is securely anchored into the steel. Locking, heavy-duty extruded screens make entry from the outside less inviting. Sash vent latches allow for consistent ventilation, but when needed, they make the sashes unable to be fully opened for exit or entry. The deep jamb-to-jamb interlock holds the sashes together when closed, making forced entry more difficult from the outside.

Are Schuco Windows Energy Star Rated?

Yes. ENERGY STAR qualification is an important consideration when deciding to replace your window. Schuco windows with TPS MAXX 3 and TPS MAXX 2 Glass systems are ENERGY STAR quailified for all regions of the United States. ENERGY STAR qualification is based on NFRC overall product ratings. Schuco windows with TPS MAXX significantly exceed Energy Star requirements in all zones of the United States.

Q: What is a U-factor?

A: U-factor measures the total energy efficiency of windows, including the glass and frame unit. Developed by the National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC), this rating system was developed to assist homeowners in comparing “apples to apples” when evaluating the total energy efficiency of windows. The lower the U-factor, the better the window's insulating ability. Schuco Windows have some of the lowest U-Factors in the industry. The NFRC label does not signify durability or longevity, however. Use the NFRC rating as only part of the decision making process when investing in replacement windows for your home.

Q: R-Value vs. U-Factor. What's more important?

A: R-Value stands for thermal resistance, and is typically measured in the center of the glass only. R-Value does not measure the window unit's overall efficiency. U-Factor is a more important factor when evaluating energy efficiency. According to the US Dept. of Energy, Lawrence Berkley Labs – you shouldn't consider a window with a U-Factor over a .22.

Q: Is all Low-E glass the same?

A: No! Low-E stands for “low emissivity.” There are two major types of Low-E glass. Hard-coat Low-E is a tin-based coating applied while the sheet of glass is still soft during the manufacturing process. Soft-coat Low_E glass is a silve-based coating that is sputter coated, similar to chrome plating the bumper of a car, although a much more complicated process. Both block radiant heat by keeping the heat ouside in the summer and keeping it inside during the winter. However, that is where the similarities end. Schuco uses only soft coat, Low-E glass. The multi-layer, silver-based coating will give better glass clarity, and significant insulation.

Q: Are all spacer systems the same?

A: No! When considering an insulated glass unit, the spacer is one of the most important parts of the entire glass system. The spacer bar seperates the sheets of glass, which creates the all-important “dead air space” between the panes. Our TPS spacer bar system is tested and proven to have one of the lowest rates of thermal conduction in the industry – significantly reducing the conduction of heat and cold during the most severe seasons. Most spacer bars are metallic, with joints that are prone to failure, allowing outside air to mix with the air or gasses between the panes of glass. This will ruin the energy efficiency of the window, not to mention spoiling your view.

Our TPS system also has the lowest tested rate of vapor transmission in the industry. This means Schuco replacement windows have the highest amount of Krypton or Argon insulating gas between the glass, and those gasses will remain in between the panes, where they belong, for decades to come.

Our unique Edge deletion process ensures that the Low-E coating on the inside edge of the glass is “sanded” away so that the TPS sealant will bond tightly to the glass. It is similar to sanding a painted wood surface before repainting. Testing has proven that failure to perform edge deletion on Low-E coated glass can create conditions for oxidation due to exposure to moisture and may also cause a seal failure.

Q: Why use exotic gases in the glass and are they safe?

A: Argon and Krypton gas are used to add energy-efficient properties inside the airspace, between the panes of window glass. Because these gases are heavier than air, they provide greater resistance to heat and cold conduction through a glass unit. These gases exist naturally in the air we breathe and are safe to use within insulated gas units.

Q: Is there a window glass that can reduce fading in my carpets and drapes?

A: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can definitely affect your fine furnishings. Some glass systems can provide protection against sun damage, however, it is important to remember that UV rays are not all bad. Humans, animals, and plants need a certain amount of UV light to thrive. Schuco's glass system provides the perfect balance of UV levels.

Q: Is it possible to eliminate condensation on my windows?

A: The moisture present in all home envvironments makes window condensation virtually impossible to elimate. You can greatly reduce condensation however by increasing indoor ventilation and controlling indoor humidity.

Q: Is it possible to have my new Schuco windows installed in the wintertime?

A; Schuco custom-made windows can be installed twelve months out of the year. Our custom-fit windows elimate time-consuming changes to the exterior and interior of your home that are often necessary with “stock” sized windows. They can be installed quickly, in most cases, with minimum fuss and “down time” for you and your home. You will start experiencing the thermal performance benefits immediately. A professional contractor will typically install your new windows one room at a time, in order to minimize your home's exposure to the elements.

Q: Do I always have to replace my existing windows with the same style?

A: That's the best thing about custom-made windows. You can replace your existing windows with a combination of styles, shapes, and color combinations. A professional home improvement expert can help you get the look you want. You can choose to retain the same style, or you can decide to dramatically enhance your home's appearance with Schuco's broad array of unique styles and proprietary designs.

Q: I really like wood windows but the maintenance is expensive. Is it possible to get the look of wood without the hassle?

A: YES! With Schuco's many interior woodgrain finishes, you can enjoy the warm look of wood windows, without the maintenance. Available in Southern Pine, Light Oak, Dark Oak, and our elegant Cherry. Schuco has a beautiful wood tone to enhance your home's traditional or contemporary décor.

Q: What warranty information should I consider when buying replacement windows?

A: You should always review the warranty when considering replacing your windows. Be sure to take note of the warranty on the glass, as well as the working components of the windows and patio doors. All Schuco products are covered with a limited-lifetime warranty, which covers you for as long as you live in your home.
